How surreal is Coronation Street at the moment? And how abysmal is the writing of DEBBIE OATES and STEPHEN BENNET. This week, we have seen a none violent character have a one night stand with the local jail bird who has plagued his life for ages. When he eventually had the fling after a night on the booze (would take much more than that really!) he went off to Italy to see the wife who walked out on him. He returns within a day or two sporting a bust lip where she hit him only to be hit again by jail bird! Then (this is the surreal part) characters walking into shot saying he deserved it! No sympathy from his mother. How wierd. What message does that convey?
Wind the clock back to the 90's. Liz McDonald has an affair (shocker) and husband slaps her. Well fuck me! GMTV were going live to the street and the press were having a field day about domestic violence. The actors were interviewed and making a concerted effort to stress they were pals in real life. Double standards. The outcry that Liz McDonald added make up to her bruise. Why? Are women completely empty headed none thinking none calculating? No! In that story Liz wanted to do what it is natural to human beings. To expand on the facts. EVERYONE has done it. No exceptions. When telling a story, the truth is expanded upon, exagerated or slightly altered. Women are not exempt from this.
It makes absolutely no difference who is issuing the violence and who is receiving it. IT IS WRONG! It makes no difference because its a woman. FFS look at some women these days, Huge and behave like animals! So much weight to throw behind themselves. Its complete fiction that women aren't violent, but the reality is that SOME women are but most not. The same applies to men.
Most men would never hit a woman, yet its OK to portray men as aggressors. All men are bastards. FUCK OFF! In 2005 2 million men were the victims of female domestic violence. There is a huge stigma attached to this and, according to the documentary on UK TV's Five, that the majority of cases would go unreported. This would make the figure more alarming. But we aren't bothered. Because its men. They are deemed to be wimps and pathetic because they allowed it to happen. The story of the man who died in this programme was shocking evidence of most men's in-built desire to protect women not hurt them.
So the notion is that they should have retaliated, then where would we be? Watch the vile man hating NSPCC adverts and you will see that men are invariably and usually portrayed as the perpetrators of child abuse. And yet the NSPCC's own figures show that more women carry this out than men.
If you do some research on the matter, you will find some interesting and alarming findings. The most interesting to me was the fact that 60% of the women in the first UK 'safe' house admitted to being the instigator of violence. But women had the upper hand in such matters. Even if you punch your man and call the police, he would have been arrested irrespective. Thankfully, organizations are waking up and challenging more.
In the meantime, on sofas across the land ITV and Coronation Street is still shit.
